From Dr. Thomas Sheehan, professor of religious studies at Stanford University, in his lecture course on The Historical Jesus:

History is different in archaic cultures.  The re-writing of the past is normal and typical.  Only people who are dumb enough to read it literally, miss the point of these texts…  But what we see is that they’re more interested in the future, in the present and the future, and they rewrite the past to fit it, to fit this here.
